Fourth Grade
Grades 3 - 5 are taught using a departmentalized approach in which teachers teach specific subject areas to each grade. There are several positive outcomes to this approach; student achievement is accelerated because the teachers’ possess a genuine understanding of the subject matter and gain an understanding of each child's learning style specific to that subject. FUN:
- Caring for the student garden
- Completing hands-on experiments
- Bringing history alive with a three day and two night trip to Florida's historic St. Augustine
- Traveling to ‘Fantasy of Flight’ to explore actual aircrafts from the various time periods in history and using their flight simulator to become a flying ‘ACE’
- Visiting a planetarium to ‘see the stars’
LIFE LESSONS:
- Responsibility, self-motivation and independence
- Diligence, time management and responsibility
THE BASICS:
Language Arts encompasses reading, writing, spelling, and grammar. Students read chapter books with themes that include:
- Exploring the magical world of Harry Potter
- Traveling on an adventure in Sherwood Forest with Robin Hood and his merry men
- Being a fifth grade boy in a new school and getting lost and found in the girls’ bathroom
Everyday Math has several primary focal points that encompass the 12 units throughout the year
- Easing of the mind with the introduction of double and triple digit multiplication
- Making long-division ‘worry free’ with a simple three-four step process
- Completing fractions ‘without frowns’ with several easy tricks
Science focuses on several units of study - energy, life science, earth science, plants and ecosystems, and simple machines. These units are enhanced by:
- Completing various hands-on experiments
- Visiting a planetarium to ‘see the stars’
- Creating Science Fair Projects for competition
Social Studies focuses on Florida history from the early 1500’s - today. Highlights of state history include...
- Bringing history alive with a three day/two night trip to historic St. Augustine
- Witnessing history in action by creating three airplane models from history and ‘flying’ them
- Traveling to ‘Fantasy of Flight’ to explore actual aircrafts from the various time periods in history and using their flight simulator to become a flying ‘ACE’
STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Math):
Engineering - The Engineering is Elementary® (EiE®) project is part of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade curriculum.
- A project of the National Center for Technological Literacy® (NCTL®), established by the Museum of Science, Boston
- Research-based, standards-driven, and classroom-tested curricular materials in engineering and technology education for children in grades K-5
- Educator support includes lesson plans, assessment materials, and professional development programs that tie into other major content areas, including science and language arts
- Each EiE® unit focuses not only on engineering and technology, but also on key standards in a specific science area
