Aviation Curriculum
8th grade: Aviation. One semester course covering basic aerodynamics, aircraft design, weather, navigation, model building and rocketry. Students will have the opportunity to ride along on observer flights during high school lessons. No textbooks required for this course. Lab fee: $100
9th grade: Aeronautical Science I. This is our basic aviation class that we have taught for the past 10 years. During the course of the year, we will cover the following: Private Pilot operations, Aerodynamics, Navigation, Aviation weather reports, Cross-country flight planning and Balsa aircraft design and flight. Course is available to students 9-12th grade. Lab fee: $500 includes 1-hour orientation flight.
10th grade: Aeronautical Science II. Second semester course designed to enhance and highlight student
interest areas. Possible areas of study: Aerodynamics, Flight physiology,
Accident investigation, Advanced navigation, Aviation weather, Balsa aircraft
design and performance, Aviation history, Aircraft systems, Aircraft
performance analysis, Private Pilot Pre-solo maneuvers. Students will be
required to receive 5-hours of flight training and 3-hours of observer
flights. The 5-hours will serve as an introduction to various types of
single engine aircraft. Students will fly 1 hour in a C172N, C172SP, PA28
and a C162. These hours will accumulate towards the Private Pilot flight
training requirements. Lab Fee: $1850 covers the cost of flight training
and materials. Prerequisite is Aeronautical Science I.
11th grade: Private Pilot Operations. This is our flight-training course. Students enrolled will fly and take ground lab during periods 2, 3 and 4 of the academic day. They will receive a grade for this course, based on successful completion of the following areas: Pre-solo written, Private Pilot written exam results and Private Pilot check ride. Cost: $12500. Covers cost of license, private pilot kit and uniform wings. No prerequisite other FAA private pilot regulations.
12th grade: Advanced Pilot Operations. Prerequisite: completion of Private Pilot License. Offered during periods 2-4, students will be engaged in self-guided study. The purpose of the course is to build cross-country flight time to meet Federal Aviation regulations regarding instrument rating. Students who already have met 50-hour cross-country flight time may proceed to Instrument rating preparation and study. We will use this course to enhance pilot skill in the areas of instrument flight, flight planning and weather data interpretation. Cost: $8500 either to complete 50-hour or to receive training leading to Instrument rating, to do both would cost $17,000 (Covers test prep materials, textbook, Instrument pilot kit)
