At AFA, our students not only have the opportunity to learn from a curriculum that pushes the boundaries of academic excellence, but they also understand the key values in Character Education. The values of respect and responsibility are vital components of our everyday life and instilled in every child. Students in our classrooms learn through a variety of modes: hands-on activities, SmartBoards in every classroom, and caring, loving teachers.
Due to our small class sizes, we are able to offer individualized academic attention, which pushes our children to exceed their own expectations. Not only are our students top notch academically, but they have FUN! Where else can you go to the waterfront, build moving machines in Lego Robotics, and use a laptop to do research or play educational games in just one day? Only at AFA, will your child be able to experience this and much more.
The Greatest Gift We Can Give a Child
Academic success begins for children by placing them in an environment where they love to learn! The greatest gift we can give a child is to cultivate within each of them an ability to become independent learners by applying their own style of thinking, learning, and imagining. Not only does this allow children to fully develop their unique personality, but it also creates life-long learners.
Establishing a Solid Foundation
Admiral Farragut Academy provides a rich learning environment with a solid foundation of academics, which includes reading, writing, and arithmetic. Each of these academic areas is enhanced with developmental activities designed to promote emotional, social, and physical areas of growth. Due to the small class sizes, diversities in learning styles can also be accommodated with curriculum, that incorporates auditory, visual, and tactile implementation of the learned materials.
Character Counts
Headmaster CAPT Robert J. Fine, Jr. recently wrote in his blog,
"Within our culture today, the lack of common courtesies, ethical and moral behavior, manners, and care for others is so prevalent that a student equipped with these attributes stands head and shoulders above their peers."
By integrating Character Development into all aspects of the curriculum, the fundamental traits of leadership, courage, trustworthiness, fairness, and caring become a part of the regular classroom experience each day. Positive reinforcement and modeling by the teachers empowers students to take responsibility for their actions.
We want our students to have fun and enjoy their time at school each day. The greatest compliment that a teacher can hope for is to see the seeds of strong character development take root within their students. The best words a teacher can hear from a student is he/she say, "I can't wait to come to school!"
Social Development
Social development is also part of this successful formula. Nurturing the important relationship skills of "getting along with others", fostering social awareness of "how your actions affect others," and encouraging critical thinking in order to be willing to "do the right thing" are all part of the everyday instruction of our students. Physical Education also provides additional opportunities for teaching team-building, cooperative play, and sportsmanship. Students' growth continues after the academic day, if they choose, with various after-school activities through team sports, clubs, and community service opportunities. By the time our students graduate from Admiral Farragut Academy Elementary School, they will have experienced first-hand what it means to be productive citizens within a caring community.
